I listened to the new Vijay Iyer album, Historicity, on the drive back from Decorah today. I think it's my 10th listen through the album. Just keeps getting better and better. Some things happen on that album I didn't know could happen in jazz. It's really remarkable.
I enjoy edgy jazz like this much the same way I like cyberpunk novels. Typically explores esoteric and challenging material in astonishingly enjoyable ways. I especially love track 4 and track 8. The layering in 8 is unbelievable.
If you haven't taken time for a jazz piano trio for a while, try this one out.
