Pre-baptism instruction

Pastors: What do you tend to use as the source for your pre-baptismal instruction? a) Catechism, b) Liturgy, c) Erlander, or d) other? If other, what? And how do you like what you are currently doing?

Parents: Do you remember pre-baptism instruction for the baptism of your child? What was it like? What do you need, hope to learn when you attend it?

  1. Erlander and Liturgy. At a minimum one meeting with the baptizand or parent (depending upon age). This individual approach works well for this small congregation.

  2. I meet once with the parents - I work through a powerpoint presentation I adapted from Here We Stand, then we watch a video and I give them the Erlander. I am very unhappy with this. The Here We Stand stuff is fine - but the video is too long and is not made for this - it is made for confirmation. The Erlander is fine - but are they really reading it? I created my own First Communion program which I really like - but I have not been able to come up with anything I am happy with, and I am open to suggestions.

  3. Well, I'm in the middle of writing lessons for a new Augsburg Fortress resource that will become available in 2011, so you can watch for that. I think it will help.

  4. I love! love! love! the new Augsburg First communion curriculum. And have gotten fantastic feedback from parents. If I can use the new curriculum in one-on-one situations, I'll give it a serious look.
