This is probably one of the strangest and most complex sermons I've preached in the past few years. I tried to be faithful to the complexity of the text itself. Also, we then gave a doubled and extended gift at communion, where Jesus doesn't just remind his hearers that God gives gifts, but identified himself as the gift: "I am the bread of life." Jesus gives himself in his gifts and in so doing extends the recipients of the gifts themselves as co-givers.
Or something like that.
