Here's another piece from the Martin Marty Center's "Sightings" newsletter that I just read earlier, which highlights the alienation in the gap between micro-level agency and macro-level problems, personal experience and world crises.
http://divinity.uchicago.edu/martycenter/publications/sightings/archive_2012/0405.shtmlM. Feel free to send me an email or something : ) I also recommend reading all the books - good stuff. While the movie was good, the books are better. I have not seen the movie, but just raced through the entire trilogy and found it mesmerizing.

With regard to #3, the comment by President Snow (although I can't remember if it's in the book or not) reminds me of the attitude of the Controller, Mustapha Mond, in Brave New World. Snow (at least in the books) is much more interested in naked power, whereas Mond is more of a resigned philosopher-king in the style of Plato. 'We've gone on controlling ever since. It hasn't been very good for truth, of course. But it's been very good for happiness.'

Read the whole series and you'll find some answers to your thoughts #2 or #4. Either that or you'll be led into more questions. I think Jesus' question 'Can Satan cast out Satan?,' which is so important to Rene Girard, is a question both Collins is asking and we are asking of her. Without giving away the third book's ending, perhaps she herself means to leave it an open question.

I prefer Girard himself to Alison, but that's just me.Chip Frontzhttp://religiousgrounds.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4020417.post-69596765089499381352012-04-03T18:07:50.617-05:002012-04-03T18:07:50.617-05:00Awesome, Julie. Definitely YA, but with enough substance to keep me interested. It instantly scored bonus points with me for featuring such a strong, constant female lead in Katniss. Agreed that the soundtrack for this first film is fab.

Some interesting points here. Need to do some reading on the Girard before I could voice an opinion. Thanks for making the linkage for me.

The spectacle theme is fleshed out even more compellingly later in the arc of the story. IMO Collins' does a fairly nice job allegorizing the Greek "Bread and Circuses" in modern/futuristic terms and explores such a system's inherent untenability on both the macro (across Panem) and micro (among/involving the key characters directly) levels.xx Ahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17798592020341773441noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4020417.post-22773424759722463462012-03-31T23:21:26.871-05:002012-03-31T23:21:26.871-05:00Spectacle as a means to distract the masses was pi...Spectacle as a means to distract the masses was pioneered by the Greeks (Olympics) and the Romans (Colosseum Gladiators) and is more integral to Post-Modern Western power and culture through contemporary media that it ever was.Larshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02463719485456667656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4020417.post-55216211238393336652012-03-31T21:42:15.099-05:002012-03-31T21:42:15.099-05:00And I'm now listening to the soundtrack on Spo...And I'm now listening to the soundtrack on Spotify.
