James Kugel - How to Read the Bible

James Kugel - How to Read the Bible

I've begun working my way through James Kugel's book on reading the Bible, and discovered a new twist. The book is 800 pages without an appendix and bibliography. In order to save on publishing expenses, James and the editor published the book, and then published the appendix and bib on this page, along with some errata and reviews. Interesting combination of book and on-line publishing. I'm not sure I like it.

The book itself tries to surf between modern biblical scholarship and ancient scriptural interpreters. Kugel surfs beautifully, and so the book is amazing on a lot of levels. In addition to being one of the best introductions to the ancient authors and modern biblical scholarship out there, it is also a relentless and delightful walk through Scripture (Hebrew Bible).
