Life Lesson #39: If you run farther than 20 miles or so toenails start to fall off

There are some tricks to attempt to avoid this, like wearing shoes with a bigger front "box," or getting better socks, but really, after a while, if you run that far, there is wear and tear.

However, the toenails do grow back. It just takes a really long time, since toenails grow about a third of the speed of fingernails.

All of that being said, running that far is worth the training and blood, sweat and tears. I have been running for over twenty years now, and it is the simplest and most meditative and refreshing kind of exercise I can imagine.

One thing about running that I appreciate is how in touch with your body you become. Give you a whole new perspective on Isaia 52:7, How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, "Your God reigns."

  2. Absolutely, and the longer you run the more your body draws attention to itself. Barefoot running is also great in this regard, you learn what the ground feels like, and you discover parts of your foot you had forgotten.
